Supreme Court strikes down $6B opioid settlement
The U.S. Supreme Court has struck down an opioid settlement worth $6 billion.
The funds would have been paid to those impacted by the opioid crisis. In exchange, the Sackler family, who controlled Purdue Pharma, would have been released from liability in future cases.
The payout would have been part of a Purdue Pharma bankruptcy reorganization.
The justices ruled 5-4 that a bankruptcy court could not release the Sacklers from legal claims made by opioid victims.
Settlement talks with the Sacklers must start over.
The separate Purdue Pharma bankruptcy case will continue.
